Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accompanied by leaders from different political parties, participated in the ISKCON Rath Yatra on the streets of Kolkata. This convergence of politicians from various ideological backgrounds demonstrated their collective efforts to connect with the masses.
Sukant Majumdar, the BJP State President, emphasized that his party does not engage in politics during religious festivals, as their connection with Indian culture is eternal. He stated that BJP leaders participate in such events with utmost devotion, reflecting their commitment to cultural and religious traditions.
The involvement of politicians in the Rath Yatra was not limited to any specific party. Minister Becharam Manna, for instance, pulled chariots in his constituency of Singur and Haripal, stating that the event holds religious significance. According to him, participating in the Rath Yatra is considered a virtuous act that grants spiritual benefits. Manna, who is also called upon to fulfill ceremonial roles in various pujas, believes that his participation in religious events should be seen beyond the lens of politics.
The Trinamool Congress leaders, too, actively participated in the Rath Yatra, reflecting the party's engagement with various Durga Pujas and other religious festivities. Leaders from different levels of the party hierarchy were seen involved in the event, highlighting their close association with religious celebrations.
While the saffron camp BJP took out five 'Parivartan Rath Yatras' during the last assembly elections in Bengal, the Trinamool Congress had not organized a Rath Yatra before. However, Mamata Banerjee's presence in the ISKCON Rath Yatra, accompanied by party MP Nusrat Jahan and actor Soham Chakraborty, raised some eyebrows, with questions arising about the participation of a Muslim leader in a Hindu religious event.
In conclusion, the convergence of politicians from various parties during the Rath Yatra in Kolkata showcased their efforts to connect with the public on the occasion of the state panchayat elections. While some questioned the motives behind political participation in religious events, the leaders emphasized their unwavering connection to Indian culture and their genuine devotion to religious traditions.
